18th Berbice Expo & Trade Fair: A Showcase of Innovation and Sustainability
Launched under the theme “Innovation in Oil, Gas & Agriculture for a Sustainable Future,” the much-anticipated 18th Berbice Expo & Trade Fair is set to take center stage from October 18th to October 21st, 2024. This annual event, which has become a staple in Region 6’s economic calendar, was officially introduced by Minister of Agriculture, Hon. Zulfikar Mustapha, at the Central Corentyne Chamber of Commerce (CCCC) building in Rose Hall Town. The event was graced by public and private sector representatives, reflecting its wide-reaching influence.
During his keynote speech, Minister Mustapha underscored the event’s significance in bringing together key stakeholders from across Region 6 and beyond, with the common goal of showcasing the strength and diversity of Guyana’s local businesses and industries. “This Expo is a celebration of our business community’s resilience and innovation,” he remarked, emphasizing the crucial role both the oil & gas and agricultural sectors play in Guyana’s economic trajectory.
Oil, Gas, and Agriculture: A Balanced Economic Future
Minister Mustapha highlighted the need for a harmonious relationship between the rapidly growing oil and gas industry and Guyana’s deeply rooted agricultural sector. “As Guyana emerges as a global player in the oil and gas industry, agriculture takes on even greater importance in ensuring a balanced and resilient economy,” Mustapha stated. He noted that agriculture is key to safeguarding food security and remains a pillar in the nation’s development strategy.
By drawing parallels between these two key sectors, the Minister pointed out that the oil and gas sector opens up new investment opportunities for agriculture, allowing the industry to modernize and expand. “We can build infrastructure, modernize systems, and boost production,” Mustapha said, emphasizing that strategic investments in both sectors are crucial for sustainable growth.
Modernizing Agriculture and Combating Climate Challenges
The Minister further elaborated on the government’s efforts to modernize agriculture through infrastructural development, particularly in Region 6. Billions of dollars are being invested to upgrade the region’s drainage and irrigation systems, which have long been a challenge for local farmers.
He detailed several key projects aimed at flood prevention, including the construction of two high-level canals at Manchester/Lancaster and No. 52/51, designed to drain directly into the Atlantic Ocean. “This will significantly reduce the flooding issues that have plagued this region for years,” he assured. Additionally, a new embankment from No. 66 to Canje is being built to protect both agricultural land and residential areas from floodwaters.
Region 6: A Key Player in Guyana’s Agricultural Growth
Region 6, known for its rich agricultural landscape, has long been a critical contributor to Guyana’s economy. Minister Mustapha acknowledged the region’s pivotal role, noting that it is one of the country’s main agricultural hubs. “We are here to celebrate innovation, commerce, and community, while recognizing the vital role Region 6 plays in advancing our agri-food system and ensuring food security,” he said.
In alignment with President Irfaan Ali’s CARICOM initiative, which aims to reduce the region’s food import bill by 25% by 2025, Berbice’s agricultural potential is set to expand. Minister Mustapha highlighted the increasing demand for self-sufficiency within CARICOM, and the role Berbice will play in meeting this target. “Berbice is on the path to becoming a hub for gas-supported infrastructure,” he added, referring to the significant future investments, including the massive port facility planned for Palmyra.
Strengthening Public-Private Partnerships
Minister Mustapha emphasized the critical role that the Central Corentyne Chamber of Commerce (CCCC) and the private sector play in driving economic growth in Region 6. He assured attendees that the government is committed to working closely with the private sector, viewing it as an engine of growth. “We are laying the groundwork, especially in infrastructure, to make it easier for the private sector to invest,” he explained.
The Berbice Expo, organized by the CCCC, has consistently provided an invaluable platform for both small and large businesses to showcase their products and services. Over the years, the event has attracted thousands of attendees, highlighting the region’s vibrant economic potential. This year’s Expo, scheduled to take place at the Welfare Ground in East Canje, is expected to be no different. The event is being led by CCCC President, Mr. Poonai Bhigroog, a long-standing member of the chamber and a respected businessman in the region.
With admission priced at just $500, the 2024 Berbice Expo & Trade Fair promises to be an event that will once again spotlight the innovation, growth, and collaborative spirit of Region 6 and the broader Guyanese business community.
Regional Chairman David Armogan also lent his voice to the event, praising the collaborative efforts of the Chamber, government, and private sector in making the Berbice Expo a reality year after year.
A Future of Innovation and Growth
As the 18th Berbice Expo & Trade Fair approaches, it stands as a testament to Guyana’s commitment to innovation, sustainable growth, and economic diversification. The convergence of the oil, gas, and agriculture sectors highlights a future of collaboration, where tradition and modernity combine to create a resilient and prosperous nation.
With initiatives to modernize infrastructure, boost agricultural production, and enhance the role of the private sector, this year’s Expo will not only celebrate Berbice’s contributions but also pave the way for a more sustainable and balanced future for Guyana.
