The Guyana Sugar Corporation Inc. (GuySuCo) has strongly rebuffed claims made by Member of Parliament Vinceroy Jordan, which were published in the September 16, 2024, edition of Stabroek News.
The company labeled the MP’s remarks as “reckless exaggerations, filled with misinformation, and aimed at garnering political mileage.”
In particular, GuySuCo dismissed Mr. Jordan’s allegations of corruption within the corporation, calling the claims “nonsensical.” The company emphasized that it is regularly audited by the Office of the Auditor General and had completed its financial audit for 2022, with the 2023 audit currently underway.
“These statements are not only misleading but entirely devoid of factual basis,” GuySuCo said in its statement. “Mr. Jordan should refrain from making baseless accusations when he clearly lacks the facts.”
In responding to specific concerns about the Albion Estate Power Plant, GuySuCo has confirmed that an investigation was conducted by the Guyana Fire Service and the findings of that investigation were submitted to the corporation. The estimated cost of repairs which was $600 M was based on engineering assessments, the corporation insisted.
The company also noted that two key components, power generator sets and transformers, are still being procured, but assured that all procurement processes follow established procedures.
“Despite the challenges, remedial works have been completed, and the Albion Estate is now fully operational for the second crop of 2024,” the statement added.
In response to Jordan’s allegations of the mismanagement of sugar at the Rose Hall Estate, the corporation has denied those allegations and stressed that the issue was not of missing sugar but rather an over-declaration due to a breach in standard operating procedures. This GuySuCo said led to the ultimate dismissal of the Production Manager and the Head Laboratory Technician.
“There was no missing sugar,” GuySuCo reiterated, describing Mr. Jordan’s claims as false and misleading.
GuySuCo is urging Mr. Jordan to ensure he is fully informed before making such statements, noting that the corporation remains transparent in its operations and committed to addressing any issues that arise in a timely manner.
